Cruise Packing List for Babies

Important Documents

Okay, now this one isn’t baby specific. We all need to remember these no matter our age, but it’s worth pointing them out nonetheless.

Passport

These days it doesn’t matter how old your child is. Long gone are the days of travelling on your parent’s passport.

Your baby will need their own passport. Luckily they are cheaper than an adult passport, but they’re only valid for 5 years, and the picture requirements are less strict for babies under 1 year of age.

Visa

Check the visa requirements for the country you’re visiting. If you need a visa, you’ll need to make sure your baby is covered by one too.

Birth Certificate

You may need to take the birth certificate if the baby’s surname is different to the parents’. For example, if you have adopted, your baby may not have the same surname at the time of travel.

You will not be allowed to board without this.

Necessities for Daily Care

When packing for a cruise with a baby, it’s crucial to have the essentials that will keep them clean, dry, and well-nourished. Here’s a checklist to get you started:

Diapers and wipes

Pack enough diapers and wipes to last the entire trip. Consider the number of diapers your baby typically goes through each day and add a few extra, just in case.

Baby toiletries

Include travel-sized baby wash, shampoo, lotion, and diaper rash cream.

Feeding supplies

If you’re nursing, bring a nursing cover for privacy. If bottle-feeding, pack enough bottles, formula, and sterilizing equipment. Don’t forget bibs, burp cloths, and spoons for solid foods if your baby has started eating them.

Baby food and snacks

Bring an assortment of jarred baby food, snacks, and portable snacks like cereal puffs or teething biscuits.

Baby carrier or stroller

A carrier or lightweight stroller will be invaluable for exploring the ship or going on shore excursions.

Clothing and Accessories

Dressing your baby appropriately for a cruise is essential to ensure their comfort in varying weather conditions. Cruise ships can be cold, so it’s vital to pack for all weather.

Consider the following clothing and accessories:

Onesies and sleepers

Pack enough onesies, sleepers, and pyjamas to account for potential temperature changes on the ship and during shore excursions.

Swimwear and sun hat

If your cruise includes pool or beach days, bring swimwear and a sun hat to protect your baby’s delicate skin.

Layers and jackets

Even in warmer climates, evenings can get cooler. Pack lightweight layers and a jacket or sweater for your baby.

Socks and shoes

Don’t forget socks and comfortable shoes for your baby, especially if they’re starting to walk.

Sunscreen

Carry a baby-safe sunscreen with a high SPF rating to protect your little one’s skin from harmful UV rays.

Entertainment and Comfort Items

Babies need entertainment and comfort items to keep them engaged and content during the cruise. Here are some essentials to consider:

Favorite toys and books

Bring a few familiar toys and books that your baby loves to keep them entertained during downtime.

Blankets and lovies

Packing familiar blankets and lovies can help provide comfort and a sense of security for your baby in an unfamiliar environment.

Baby monitor

If you have a separate room or spend time on the balcony while your baby is sleeping, a portable baby monitor will allow you to keep an eye and ear on your baby while they nap or sleep in the cabin.

NEVER leave your baby in the cabin alone.

Noise machine

A portable noise machine can help drown out any unfamiliar sounds and create a soothing environment for your baby to sleep.

Normally we use Spotify and an Amazon Echo, but when travelling, we’ve found the one below to work really well as it also has a night light function.

Baby-friendly snacks

Along with the food items mentioned earlier, bring a selection of healthy and age-appropriate snacks to keep your baby satisfied between meals.

Health and Safety Supplies

Prioritizing your baby’s health and safety is paramount during a cruise. Don’t forget to pack these essential items:

Medications

Bring any necessary medications your baby may require, along with a first-aid kit that includes items like band-aids, antiseptic spray, and thermometer.

Baby-proofing essentials

Ensure your cabin is safe for your baby by bringing outlet covers, corner protectors, and cabinet locks to baby-proof the space.

Hand sanitizer and wipes

Keep your baby’s hands clean and germ-free by carrying hand sanitizer and wipes for quick clean-ups.

Sunshade or umbrella

If you plan to spend time outdoors on the ship’s deck or during shore excursions, consider bringing a sunshade or umbrella to shield your baby from the sun.

Life jackets

Most cruise ships provide life jackets for infants, but it’s advisable to check in advance. If not provided, bring a well-fitting life jacket for your baby to ensure their safety during emergency situations.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for a cruise with a baby requires careful planning and a well-thought-out packing list. By ensuring you have all the essentials for daily care, clothing, entertainment, and health and safety, you can embark on a smooth sailing vacation with your little one.

Remember to consider the unique needs of your baby and the specific requirements of the cruise line you’ll be traveling with. With proper preparation, you’ll be able to create beautiful memories while enjoying a stress-free and enjoyable cruise experience with your baby. Bon voyage!
