Understanding Toll Roads in France

France’s toll road system is straightforward, with various payment methods to choose from. Plan ahead for these expenses, as tolls are a part of the driving experience in France. You can save money by researching alternative routes or purchasing a toll pass, depending on the length of your stay.

We find the easiest way to pay is to use contactless payments on a fee free credit card. Be sure to check whether you need to tell your bank that you’re heading overseas first so that they payment isn’t declined.

Driving Essentials in France

Before you rev up your engine, ensure you have all the necessary documentation, including your driving license and vehicle registration. It’s also crucial to carry mandatory safety equipment and display the UK sticker on your car. Familiarize yourself with French driving laws to avoid any hiccups on your journey.

The compulsory essentials you will need are:

  • Driving licence
  • V5 log book
  • Details of motor insurance
  • UK sticker clearly displayed on your vehicle. Not that since the UK left the EU, it has to be a UK sticker, not GB.
  • Warning triangle
  • Hi-vis jackets for every person in the vehicle
  • Headlamp converters so you don’t dazzle oncoming traffic when driving at night

You can purchase France driving essentials kits on places like Amazon for ease.

Recommended items, though not compulsory are:

  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Spare bulb kit

There is no longer a requirement to carry breathalysers in your vehicle. Also note, that while a spare bulb kit isn’t compulsory, you can get pulled over for having a light out so bringing spares is the safe option.

Tips for a Smooth Journey

To avoid the brunt of traffic, consider timing your travel during off-peak hours. Early mornings or late evenings can make for a more relaxed drive. Don’t forget to plan for regular rest stops and refueling, especially if you’re traveling with kids who might need breaks.

There are plenty of service stations on the motorways from Calais to Disneyland Paris. We always plan to only stop once, however with young kids we sometimes need to stop more than once!

Keep your mobile devices charged and consider using reliable navigation tools like GPS or travel apps to stay on the right track.
